Why pay big bucks for wooden letters when you can make them? :)
The great thing about these pallet letters is that you can choose your dimensions and also choose what color(stain) you want them to have.
You will need:
1 Pallet
Skill Saw (or any machine to cut wood)
Hammer
Nail gun or wood glue
Measuring tape/Ruler
Your preferred wood stain
Pencil/Marker
Dimensions
Srews or command frame hangers
A little background as to how I came upon making this craft, the hubby went hunting about 2 years ago and got him an 8 pointer (first time actually hunting) and so his uncle decided to get
a taxidermy of the deer's head so long story short we bought a house a year ago and he's been bugging me about hanging it up where everybody would get to see it. I looked online for ideas and came upon wooden letters spelling the word "EAT" and a deer head next to it as a cute dining room wall decor. So, I had a pallet hanging around and decided to try making the wooden letters off of a pallet and finally told the hubby, okay I will put your deer head up as long as I get to do it this way and he agreed!
Grab your skill saw and cut where you did your markings. After cutting your pieces I suggest you put your pieces together and form the letters you want it to be to make sure the size is right and it looks good.

Let's get started! you will need to dismantle the pallet. There are many ways to do so but I chose to just use a hammer and bang the boards to get them out from the pallet. I also used the back of the hammer as you see in the picture below to lift the board and to help remove the board. Then I banged on the nails to remove them from the board.
Here's where you want to have an idea of how big or small you want the letters. Once you have decided the size of the boards grab a measuring tape and pencil and measure out to the desired size mine are 36 1/2" x 17" and mark with the pencil where you need to cut. After doing this to all your boards you can whip out the skill saw.
I marked lines where I needed to cut |
If you are satisfied then you can continue to the next step:)
Now you can grab your nail gun or if you prefer wood glue then your wood glue and you will staple or glue where the pieces of boards meet.I staple both sides of the letter because I thought it would be cute to show the exposed staples and for more stability but you can also just staple one side.
Now that your letter(s) are formed you can stain them to your desired color I chose to go with Minwax jacobean 2750 which is more of a darker stain.
The instruction said to let dry at least 6 hours I actually left it overnight. Once your stain has dried take a look and decide if its the color you want if you want it darker then apply a second coat. Once completely dry I screwed them to the wall.
Here is the final look!
There is more I want to add since this is a pretty big wall but that will be on another blog. Thanks for reading hope your letters turn out great! Don't forget to subscribe to get notified when we post awesome DIY's and I would love to see how your crafts turned out so leave a comment.
